SCIENCE AND ARTS FESTIVAL
17—24 AUGUST 2002, HOBART, TASMANIA

Science themes

The scientific themes of the Festival, climate change, marine ecology, Antarctica, genetics and nutrition, link to the location, and have a direct relevance to the public. To give some examples: the weather for the Saturday Salamanca Market is a key factor to weekly success; the introduced sea star, Asterias amurensis, can be clearly seen in Waterman’s Dock; the research vessels for Antarctica often dock at Princes Wharf, and have done so ever since the early days of exploration; and Salamanca is a popular dining location! The artistic interpretations of these themes will create further interest and discussion.

Ten science topics related to these themes are features in this Festival - these are listed on the left. Explore these pages to learn more about the work of ten Tasmanian scientists.
