Synergy
Andrew Dewhurst & Celeste Chandler
Since the Renaissance, art and science have pursued a fascination
with the natural world. Our intention was to depict a selection
of images experienced during the research process. The culminating
works infer the concerns of observation, investigation and illumination
inseparable from the histories of art and science. The division
of images into separate panels is reflective of the apparently separate
stages of Peters research, and the seemingly opposed but intimately
intertwined substances of oil and water.

Andrew and Celeste have captured the variety involved in the research
of our small Marine Oils team. We research the oils found in marine
fish and microbes. Once these oils have been identified and described
they can be used as unique chemical signatures in microbial ecology,
environmental (e.g., fecal pollution) and food-chain studies, as
well as new discoveries and applications in marine biotechnology.
Andrew and Celeste have linked together very thoughtfully and impressively
the sea, the life forms we study, including fish and baby crayfish
(phyllosoma), aspects of our methods, and the "good oil"
in several forms, such as the products that we have worked on with
Australian industry. It has been a pleasure to work with these talented
artists on this special project.
