"Rosy’s instant acceptance of our model at first amazed me…None the less, like almost everyone else, she saw the appeal of the base pairs and accepted the fact that the structure was too pretty not to be true." James D. Watson

After meeting with Simon, I wanted to find more about DNA. My drawing offers a different view of the one we normally see. This is a top cross section view, looking down through the double helix. This seemed appropriate in that it alludes to many things within the one image — interconnection, balance and harmony. These aspects are intrinsic to Simon’s research on Antarctic food webs. DNA is a very beautiful structure in itself, and from this perspective one not unlike a mandala. "Animism is the ultimate defender of science and science of animism.

After all, the scientific world more easily than any other can identify with the idea of a universal inner structure. And most scientists would agree that the profound unity of that structure is an essential beauty." John Ralston Saul

Simon Jarman

I thought this impression of DNA was really original because Dawn chose a view down the length of the molecule, whereas most representations of DNA use a side view. This view of DNA from another angle has brought out an extra aspect of the beauty of the structure of this famous molecule that is not normally seen. I also liked the use of colour, which was much more subtle than the high-contrast representations that a scientist would use. Great to have a really beautiful interpretation of something that I study.
