The artists
Anne Morrison
Anne's collaboration is with scientist Caroline
Sutton.
As an artist my interest in working with the landscape developed
originally in response to my experiences of both an intimate and
distant perspective of the Australian landscape. Travel to and across
remote and isolated environments, observing patterns and processes
within nature informed my work from 1994 onwards.
I sought methods to evoke ones heightened sensory experiences within
these remote environments, through an exploration of innovative
fluid painting processes. The paintings represented in the exhibition
The Sentient Body were fluid, dynamic and rhythmical (large-scale)
works, evoking both the body and land.
"When one moves through the landscape it is not merely a
particular view one remembers, but a complex unfolding of experiences
and sensations that occur over a period of time." Anne Morrison
More recently my work has developed from my experience of nature
within city landscapes. The little pockets of green spaces found
within cities, particularly in Hobart has led to a new body of paintings
in progress, called the city grasslands, (a working
title). This work is an exploration of delicate and fragile organic
forms. One series has evolved by developing imagery from the dandelion
flower as is it reaches its seeding stage. These works are familiar
yet abstracted landscapes, poetic and meditative in nature. The
paintings exist between two possible worlds, that of the microscopic
and of the macroscopic. A tiny flower in the process of seeding,
delicate, fragile, yet beautiful, triggering the potential for new
growth, new life, could also be interpreted as a starburst of activity
within another world or context.
