The artists

Andrew Dewhurst

Andrew's and fellow artist, Celeste Chandler's, collaboration is with scientist Peter Nichols.

My work focuses on pictorial illusionism within the painted interior. I try to create a visual construct that extends the viewer's experience of being both spectator and active participant within interior spaces. I am also interested in the duplicity apparent in mirrors and reflections as a pictorial device for the viewer to question and interact with what they see.

The paintings are a culmination of an involved process, both content and composition is painted from one or more digital prints. These are seamless constructs of many photographs that have been manipulated with Photoshop. The process from print to painting is an important one, because with the start of a new painting begins the patient build up of layers of opaque paint and multiple glazes. The real challenge is successfully communicating something beyond the depiction of what is represented in the painting.

The undeniable force behind my work is the fascination I have with oil paint, its ability to create the illusion of three-dimensional space on a flat surface and therefore creating its own reality that can be altogether extraordinary.
